Carbon steel is produced in multiple grades and alloying chemistries. Separating carbon steel grades such as 1018, A36, 1144, A366/1008, 1020 and 8620 can be extremely difficult with a handheld XRF unit because of the unreported carbon value and the lack of low limits of detection. Handheld XRF will produce grade families but cannot produce grade identification information for carbon steels.
Mobile OES systems are capable of analyzing carbon present in steel along with other important elements such as Molybdenum, Phosphorous, Sulfur, Copper, and others. A Mobile OES system can be used to perform on-site Positive Material Identification (PMI) for sorting out a material mix.
